Help us bring Sunny's story to life!

Why I am a Champion for this Cause

Dear Friends,

I am helping raise money for a really terrific production using this new crowd sourcing platform.  Civic Ensemble has challenged me to raise $1,000 by the end of May.  May 28th happens to be my birthday, so I want to make this fundraiser my big birthday present.  Here’s what I want to do:  I’d like to get 100 friends of mine to give $10 (or $50 or $5?) by May 28th.  What I will promise in return is this: For every $250 I raise, I will post a newsy Facebook or email update on the big life changes that are upcoming for me this summer.  Mind you, I have NEVER posted anything personal on Facebook so this will be a big step for me (and I’m nervous even thinking about it).

So if you want to give to my personal campaign because you love the arts, that would be wonderful.

If you want to help me celebrate my birthday, I would be ever so grateful.

If you want to push me to do something I’ve never done before and find out about the big changes in my life, go for it!

I hope you will support my campaign and help me reach that $1,000 goal.

Much affection and respect,

More about the campaign:

SUNNY’S SPRING CHALLENGE honors plucky young Sunny, the lead character in four-time Emmy Award winner Judy Tate’s masterful new play SLASHES OF LIGHT. It takes place at an all-black parochial middle school in 1966 Chicago. Sunny – a precocious, talented, and effervescent young girl – befriends a new white history teacher who carries hidden scars from a painful past. Sunny’s relationships with her teacher, her best friend, and her middle school crush, create a curious quadrangle. Echoes of the Holocaust intersect with the final throes of the civil rights movement in this coming-of-age story.

Civic Ensemble is honored to help bring the upcoming World Premiere of SLASHES OF LIGHT to Ithaca, New York: June 11-29 – being presented as a joint project with the Kitchen Theatre Company, and directed by Melissa Maxwell. Click here for tickets and info.

We are proud to champion innovative playwrights like Judy Tate, and we are proud to be premiering fresh, socially-relevant stories that need more room on the American theatre landscape.

By contributing any amount to Sunny’s Spring Challenge, you can help bring Sunny to life!  Your support will make possible a prestigious world premiere in Ithaca, and it will allow Civic Ensemble to offer more world premieres of exciting new plays by women and playwrights of color.

Donations are tax-deductible.
